Terminate contract of company: Councillors

Garbage collection very poor, they say

April 26, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:38 am IST - SALEM:

With complaints pouring in on the poor solid waste management works being carried out in 21 wards by the private company, both the AIADMK and DMK Councillors wanted the contract terminated.

During the monthly council meeting held at Hanging Garden here on Friday, Councillors said that inadequate number of workers lead to poor garbage collection, and no cleaning works have been carried out in the wards.

Councillors said that Rs. 86 lakh was being paid to the contractor every month. Mayor S. Soundappan said that action would be taken if any violation of the contract was found. Corporation Commissioner K.R. Selvaraj said that the civic body has received many complaints about poor performance of the private contractor and inspection has been carried out in those wards.

He said that the agreement paves way for penalising the contractor. Every month 25 per cent of the total bill was being reduced as penalty, he added. He said that zone-level monitoring would be done.

Most of the AIADMK Councillors alleged that tax collectors were getting bribe, and failed to fix various taxes leading to revenue loss for the corporation. These officials should be handed over to the Directorate of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption, they added. Mayor directed officials to initiate stern action against four Assistant Commissioners for failing to control the tax collectors. Commissioner asked Bill Collectors to visit each wards and fix tax according to rules.

DMK Councillors staged a walkout stating that they were not satisfied with the Mayor’s reply.
