Ten-year RI for accused in sexual assault case

Thoothukudi Fast Track Mahila Court Judge J. Flora on Tuesday sentenced a 25-year-old man to undergo 10-year rigorous imprisonment for sexually assaulting a minor girl and threatening her.

According to the prosecution, S. Koorankottai Sakthi alias Kottaiyan (25) an auto driver and a resident of Pachaiyapuram village in Vilathikulam taluk, was found guilty of sexually assaulting a 13-year-old girl of the same locality.

The victim used to attend tuition conducted by the sister of the accused. The girl, who studied eighth standard, was alone in the class when the accused sexually assaulted her.

The judge said the girl had become pregnant, and she lodged a complaint with Soorangudi police on March 3, 2013.

The accused was punished under Section 6 of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act (POCSO) Act, 2012 (10-year rigorous imprisonment) and under 506 (ii) of the IPC (two-year rigorous imprisonment). Imposing a fine of Rs. 1, 000 on the accused, the judge said the jail terms would run concurrently.
