Tension grips village

March 31, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:37 am IST - DINDIGUL:

There is tension in Ayyampalayam near Batlagundu since Sunday evening after a group of people locked the gate of Seelaikari Amman Temple over a dispute.

When the temple pujari Muthaian was critically ill last week, local people deputed Selvam, his brother’s son, to look after the temple work. When Muthaian returned to work, Selvam was relieved.

When special pujas were performed at Ayyanar Temple to fix the date for the annual festival of Seelaikari Amman Temple, Selvam and his accomplices locked up the Amman temple on Sunday evening.

Hundreds of villagers thronged the Pattiveeranpatti police station on Sunday night demanding action against Selvam and others. Later, they assembled in front of the temple and threatened to break the lock.

The police assured to convene a peace meeting on Monday, following which they dispersed.

But when the peace meeting was not convened till Monday evening, the villagers thronged in front of the temple and condemned police inaction.
