Pressing for their demands, including a comprehensive pension scheme, the rural temple priests staged a demonstration at Jawahar Grounds in Palayamkottai on Wednesday.
They said the State government should implement the comprehensive pension scheme for them and give all benefits being extended through the welfare board meant for the priests.
Moreover, the monthly salary of Rs. 5,000 should be given to all priests, who offer prayers in rural temples regularly, they said.
District coordinator of the temple priests’ association Pandi presided over the agitation.
In the agitation organized in Tuticorin, a group of temple priests tried to lay siege to the Office of Deputy Commissioner, Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowment Department on Alagesapuram Main Road, the police arrested 37 protestors including three women.
