‘Technology for treating biomedical wastes developed’

March 28, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:54 am IST - VELLORE:

The Institute for Plasma Research, Department of Atomic Energy (DAE), Gujarat has developed the plasma technology for treatment of biomedical wastes.

This is one among the many technologies which the various research centres under the DAE have developed for addressing the problems faced by the society, especially those of pollution and solid waste management, said J. Daniel Chellappa, Senior Scientist, Technical Coordination Wing, DAE, Bhaba Atomic Research Centre (BARC), Chennai.

He was talking to newspersons on the sidelines of the National Conference on Frontiers in Chemistry & Environment (NCFCE) -2015 organized by the Department of Chemistry of the C. Abdul Hakeem College of Engineering and Technology (CAHCET) at Melvisharam on Friday.

Dr. Chellappa said that the technology known as Plasma Pyrolysis Technology provided for complete pyrolysis (thermochemical decomposition of organic material at high temperatures) of all types of hospital medical wastes.

The Institute of Plasma Research is ready to provide the technology to any hospital which is interested in it.

'Tannery pollution

Referring to the problem of tannery pollution faced by Vellore district, Dr. Chellappa said that the BARC would provide decentralised technology to any tannery that was interested in a solution to the problem.

The BARC has a strong group on water resources management which carried out studies on the flow of groundwater and the extent of pollution.

This group would be able to help in tackling the problem of groundwater pollution caused by the discharge of sewage wastes in rivers such as the Palar, he said.

Earlier inaugurating the national conference, Dr. Chellappa said that the Tamil Nadu government had approached BARC to solve the environmental problem caused by the dyeing industries in the Noyyal River in Tirupur. The BARC provided decentralized solutions for the pollution problems caused by dyes and other industrial effluents.

MoU signed

V.M. Abdul Latheef, Correspondent, CAHCET said that CAHCET had signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Ranipet Tannery Effluent Treatment Company (RANITEC) and Visharam Tannery Effluent Treatment Company (VISHTEC) to find effective solutions to the problem of tannery pollution.

S. Ziaudeen Ahmed, Chairman, CAHCET released the conference souvenir. A. Kumar, Principal presided. U. Peer, Dean, Science and Humanities, CAHCET welcomed the gathering.
