Good human relations not only bring great personal rewards but are essential to the success of any enterprise, said Hema Gopal, vice-president, Tata Consultancy Services, inaugurating the ‘TechnothirsT’2015, a national-level technical symposium for engineering students, organised by A.V.C. College of Engineering, Mayiladuthurai. She advised students to improve their skills and transform their engineering knowledge to evolve as inventors and innovators. Ms. Gopal released the symposium souvenir and the first copy was received by N. Vijayarangan, chairman, AVC Educational Institutions. K. Karthikeyan, secretary, AVC Educational Institutions, and C. Sundar Raj, Principal, were present. Technical sessions were conducted and over 150 papers were presented during the during the two-day symposium. More than 400 students participated in various technical events. At the valediction, Rajagopalan Duraiswamy, corporate trainer, NIS SPARTA, gave away certificates and cash awards to the participants.

Social media and TV broadcasting

The proper way of using social media and television broadcasting came in for discussion at a seminar on ‘Social media and television broadcasting,’ organised by Broadcast Engineering Society (India), Thanjavur chapter, at K. Ramakrishnan College of Engineering. V. Srinivasavaradhan, Director, Doordarshan, Puducherry, elaborated the pros and cons of social network and television broadcasting. He explained the technologies behind the two media with suitable case studies. A. Chitra, chairperson, Broadcast Engineering Society (India), Thanjavur chapter, and Deputy Director, Doordarshan, Tiruchi, said Doordarshan has already adapted many techniques in communication technologies. She briefed about the activities of Broadcast Engineering Society and its services to the students and engineering community. S. Raghavan, Professor, National Institute of Technology, Tiruchi, and D. Srinivasan, Principal, K. Ramakrishnan College of Engineering, spoke.

Kalai Kaviri Day

Kalai Kaviri College of Fine Arts celebrated Kalai Kaviri Day and platinum jubilee of founder Rev. S.M. George. Former Minister N. Nallusamy was the chief guest. T.K.S. Senthil Kumar, founder and secretary, Anbalayalam, a voluntary organisation, was presented ‘Kalai Kaviri Founder MSGR. S.M. George Harmony Award 2015.’

Application development

Around 50 PG students participated in a three-day workshop on ‘Application development using Python,’ organised by the PG and Research department of Computer Science of Nehru Memorial College. Hands on training were given to students by M. Muralidharan, Head of the department, and Assistant Professors K. Ponvel Azhagu Lakshmi, V. Priya and P. Kalpana. N. Sekar, former DGM, BHEL, delivered a lecture on creativity and problem solving skills. Lateral thinking will help solve the problems and enhance creativity, he said. Mr. Sekar distributed the certificates to participants of the workshop. Pon. Balasubramaniyan, college president, and T. Jayaprakasam, Principal, were present.

Enterprise Resource Planning

Enterprise Resource Planning can be leveraged to drive business growth by providing online access to information from anywhere across the globe and improve operational efficiency, said R. Gururajan, Assistant Executive Director, Dalmia Cements, while delivering a lecture on ‘The impact of ERP solutions on the industry.’ By offering a high-level view of key business indicators, it facilitates accurate management decisions, increased flexibility, control, and consequently greater customer satisfaction. ERP is used in disaster recovery where more than one backup is used in case of failure, he said.

Focus on child rights

The students of the Department of Social Work of Bishop Heber College organised a programme on child rights at Government Middle School in Mullikarumbur, Srirangam taluk. Alli Rani Balaji, chair, Child Development Division of Rotary Club of Tiruchi, was the resource person. Children spoke on their rights and national leaders. About 60 students of standards VIII and IX participated in oratorical and painting competitions.

Education for investors

The Department of Commerce of AIMAN College of Arts and Science for Women organised a workshop on ‘Financial education for young investors’ sponsored by Securities Exchange Board of India (SEBI). PL. Senthil, Assistant Professor of Commerce, Jamal Mohamed College, was the resource person.

Disaster management

The PG and Research Department of Economics and NSS wing of Holy Cross College jointly organised a workshop on ‘Disaster management.’ Sri Sathiya Sai Disaster Management team explained the disasters and their management. More than 100 students participated.
