A high-powered committee of the Union Health and Family Welfare Ministry will take the call on the location of the proposed All India Institute of Medical Science (AIIMS) facility in Tamil Nadu.

The visiting Central team constituted by the Ministry will submit its preliminary report on the five sites recommended by the State Government based on which the committee will decide, team leader and Joint Secretary, Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Dharitri Panda said here on Friday.

Ms. Panda told presspersons after a spot inspection of the Sengipatti site in Thanjavur that the team was verifying the check list entries already forwarded to the Ministry by the respective district administrations of the five sites identified for the purpose with the ground reality.

The sites were in Thanjavur, Pudukkottai, Madurai, Erode, and Chengalpattu districts and one among them will be the lucky winner.

Ms. Panda said the administrations had put their best foot forward in their bid to push their claims.

Team member J. Balachander of JIPMER, Puducherry, told The Hindu that the proposed AIIMS facility would basically look for the best possible factors that go into clinical practice, academic excellence and community-oriented research and those aspects would be taken into account for assessing the sites.

Although international in outlook, the integrated clinic-academic-research facility would keep in mind the local needs from the professional medical angle.

A host of other allied pharmaceutical and paramedical faculties would find a place in the new AIIMS facility. Students from across the nation and research scholars and medical experts from all around the globe would share space in the proposed AIIMS realm, he added.

The five-member team comprised, apart from Ms. Panda and Dr. Balachander, engineer N.L. Satish from the NIMHANS, Bengaluru, architect Sachin Mehendru from the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, and Under Secretary to the Government L. Chandrasekaran.

After the site inspection, the team had a detailed discussion with the administration officials. District Collector N. Subbaiyan marshalled his officials in presenting the case of Thanjavur.
