August 14, 2010 11:41 pm | Updated 11:41 pm IST - CHENNAI:

Teaching yoga will be made compulsory in the colleges in Tamil Nadu, Higher Education Minister K. Ponmudi said on Saturday while participating in the centenary celebrations of Vethathiri Maharishi.

“There is nothing wrong in introducing yoga in colleges. Both day scholars and hostellers can be taught yoga every day for half-an-hour,” he said, responding to the requests made by the participants including Vice-Chancellors of various universities.

He said the universities could do research on the thoughts of Vethathiri Maharishi.

Stressing that “mental peace” alone would create peace in the world, he said the messages of Vethathiri Maharishi should reach the youth in the country.

Lyricist Vairamuthu said while Ramalinga Adigalar was disappointed that many people were not ready to follow his principles, Vethathiri Maharishi, who followed Vallalar succeeded in creating a mass following.

Madras University Vice-Chancellor G. Thiruvasagam, Manonmaniam Sundaranar University Vice-Chancellor R.T. Sabapathy Mohan and former CBI director D.R. Karthikeyan were among those who participated.
