Nearly 12,400 teachers and headmasters of government and government-aided schools wore black badges to school in Vellore district on Thursday.
Following the attack on a headmaster by a class XI student in Tirupattur on Monday, members of various teachers and headmasters associations met recently and passed a number of resolutions. They condemned the attack on the headmaster, R. Babu.
To put forward their demands, teachers and headmasters of 199 government and government-aided high schools and 228 government and government-aided higher secondary schools wore black badges to work. They submitted a petition outlining their demands to Collector S.A. Raman on Thursday.
In the petition, they wanted the State government to come up with a legislation to ensure the job security and safety of headmasters and teachers of government, government-aided and private schools like the prevailing legislation for safety of doctors, medical staff and hospitals.
They also demanded that the government should not create stress in headmasters, teachers and students by insisting on improving pass percentage in the class X, XI and XII board examinations.
They also urged the State government to create four educational districts in Vellore from the present two. Among others, S.N. Janardhanan, State executive committee member of Joint Action Committee of Tamil Nadu Teachers Organisations and Government Employees Organisations, Kasilingam, district president of Tamil Nadu Higher Secondary Schools Headmasters Association were present.
