Teachers demand scrapping of GO

Members of Tamil Nadu High and Higher Secondary School Graduate Teachers’ Association here on Friday demanded scrapping of government order placing under suspension the invigilators and flying squad personnel for any incident of malpractice by students during examinations.

Leading the agitation, S. Selvin, district president, said that it was unfortunate that instead of students, found guilty of malpractice in the examination hall, teachers had to bear the punishment.

Some teachers were placed under suspension in Thiruvannamalai for this reason recently. Besides, he said, teachers had been instructed to take special classes for 10th and 12th standard students during the summer vacation to produce better results. It caused mental depression among teachers and hence authorities should withdraw these new regulations.

There was ample time to teach the students during working days. Further, he said while free laptops and bicycles had been delivered to student beneficiaries at government functions, teachers were instructed to issue free note books to students and it had become a cumbersome task for them.

More importantly, counselling sessions for teachers seeking transfers were often scheduled in June, July or August. Teachers faced severe hardship to get their children admitted to schools and therefore transfer counselling should be conducted in May to ensure admission of children to schools in time. Moreover, exam duty for teachers should be based on seniority, he said.
