Teacher held on the charge of killing mom-in-law

The Ramamurthy Nagar police arrested a 28-year-old Montessori teacher on Thursday for allegedly murdering her mother-in-law on August 8, and robbing gold and cash to pass it off as a murder for gain. But the police had suspected that it was an inside job.

They were also suspicious of the scratch marks on the right hand and neck of the teacher Nasira Begum. Nasira is married to Imransab, the only son of the victim Badrunissa.

They live in a three-storey house along with their three children. Badrunissa had rented out two portions of her house.

According to the police, Nasira Begum left for school on August 8, signed the register and then returned to her house at Subramanya Extension in Ramamurthy Nagar.

She picked up a butcher’s knife and attacked her mother-in-law Badrunissa who was asleep. “Badrunissa fought back. In the melee, she had scratched Nasira’s right hand and neck,” said the police. Her husband ran a butcher’s shop.

After confirming that Badrunissa was dead, Nasira allegedly took out three gold chains, a pair of bangles and Rs. 60,000, which was kept in her cupboard. She then returned to the school.

Nasira’s husband, Imransab, found the body of his mother on returning home from work in the evening.

On inspecting the crime scene, the police did not find any sign of forced entry. They suspected the involvement of someone known to the family.

They zeroed in on Nasira who had sustained fresh wounds on her hand and neck. “Initially, she told us that she had injured herself while cutting vegetables,” said a source in the police. The police made enquiries in her school.

They were told that Nasira had been absent between 9 am and 10.30 am.

Her colleagues told the police that Nasira did not have any injuries when she reported for work in the morning. But they saw bandages on her hands later that day. On further questioning, Nasira confessed to the crime.
