Teacher held for causing boy’s death

In another case, a teacher held for inflicting injuries on a boy with an iron box

In what appears to be a case of corporal punishment, a 10-year-old boy, who was allegedly caned by his teacher at a Madrassa in Dharmapuri, died on Monday.

In another case reported in Tirupur, an Arabic teacher reportedly caused burns using an iron box on a boy for being naughty.

Serious injuries

The victim suffered serious injuries on many parts of his body and was admitted to hospital. Both the teachers were arrested, police sources said.

In Dharmapuri, police said B. Irfan (10), who studied in the Madrassa at Palacode, was allegedly caned by his teacher M. Hidhayathullah (28). The boy complained of nausea and fainted.

He was declared dead when he was rushed to hospital. A complaint was preferred with the police on Tuesday night, police sources said.

Police registered a case under section 174 (death under suspicious circumstances) of Criminal Procedure Code (CrPC).

Following a complaint and post-mortem, the case was altered to Section 302 (murder) of IPC. Hidhayathullah (28) of Chittoor district was arrested and produced before the Palacode Judicial Magistrate, who remanded him in judicial custody.

The victim’s father, an auto driver, in Bangalore, said the boy was admitted to the Madrassa six months ago.

In Tirupur, the Mangalam police on Wednesday registered a case under Section 307 (attempt to murder) of IPC against Mohammed Sheikh Parith (34), an Arabic tutor in a Madrasa at Agraharaputhur, on charges of causing burns to a six-year-old student using an iron box.

Attempt to murder

Inspector J. Loganathan of Mangalam police station said that the police, registered a case under Sections 324 (voluntarily causing hurt by dangerous means) and 506 (ii) (criminal intimidation) at the time of picking up the accused on Tuesday night. However, after recording the statement of the injured boy in the hospital, the case was altered to ‘attempt to murder’.

According to police sources, the burn injuries came to light when some relatives visited the boy in the hospital. The accused had used the iron box to scare the boy because he refused to get up early, the sources added.

The victim’s mother Jasmine told The Hindu that there were burns on the boy’s thighs, eyebrows, mouth, hip, stomach, back and even on the private parts.

However, he was responding to treatment and was likely to be discharged on Thursday.
