The Telugu Desam Party on Thursday wanted the Centre to enact a legislation bringing all water resources in the country under its control, saying only such a move would solve inter-State water disputes.
“The Centre should control and monitor all water resources and mines in the country,” said TDP MP Y.S. Chowdary, who was here to seek AIADMK general secretary Jayalalithaa's support in Parliament for his party's campaign against the Babli irrigation project by the Maharashtra government.
Mr. Chowdary said disputes between States were likely to increase if the Centre failed to step in to take control of water resources.
“The disputes will create law and order problems and ultimately lead to disintegration of States,” he told reporters outside Ms. Jayalalithaa's Poes Garden residence.
Asked whether Ms. Jayalalithaa had agreed to offer her support, Mr. Chowdary said he had presented her with a factsheet.
“She wanted time to go through the details.” He expressed the hope that she would support his party.
Mr. Chowdary said he would also meet the MPs of other political parties, including the representatives of the DMK in New Delhi when they visit the Capital to attend Parliament.
He said construction of a dam across the Palar near Kuppam by the Andhra Pradesh government did not figure at the meeting with Ms. Jayalalithaa.
Mr. Chowdary was accompanied by Nellore MLA Beed Mastan Rao.
