Tamil Nadu Veterinary and Animal Sciences University (TANUVAS) and Agri-Food and Biosciences Institute (AFBI), Belfast, Northern Ireland, have signed a memorandum of understanding for collaborative research and transfer of technology in animal health.

Speaking to reporters after exchanging the papers, TANUVAS Vice-Chancellor R. Prabakaran said that as both organisation were leaders in the area of animal disease diagnostics, health and disease surveillance with highly skilled faculty and good infrastructure, the collaboration would ensure smooth transfer of technology and knowledge in the field of animal health research.

It would also facilitate the exchange of faculty and students to enable the sharing of expertise for the mutual benefit of the two countries.

Molecular mapping of emerging poultry diseases, avian nephritis, diagnosis and survey of avian viruses, diagnostics for tuberculosis, leptospirosis, toxoplasmosis, brucellosis and Johne's disease were some of the areas on which research has been envisaged, Dr. Prabakaran said.

Bob Hanna, Senior Professor, Veterinary Services, AFBI, said the organisation recognised the overriding importance of developing research links with institutions throughout the world as infectious diseases in veterinary medicine were becoming a global issue. Increasing international trade in meat and animal production also necessitated close scientific liaison to ensure compatibility in standards of food safety and hygiene.
