Sleuths of the district unit of the Directorate of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption (DVAC) on Tuesday nabbed an employee of Tamil Nadu Generation and Distribution Corporation (Tangedco) for demanding bribe.
Jayakumar (40) was a Tangedco inspector of assessment in Vellore. He was approached by N. Senthilkumar (34) of Vasanthapuram for conversion of electricity tariff.
“Senthilkumar had a house and two portions that he had put to commercial use. He had converted these two portions into a house and approached the electricity department to convert the tariff from commercial to domestic,” said M. Balasubramanian, additional superintendent of police (ADSP), DVAC.
Jayakumar went for an inspection to Senthilkumar’s house and informed him that he had to pay a pending amount of ₹38,700.
No notice on dues
The department had till then not issued any notice regarding dues. He demanded a bribe of ₹10,000 to waive the tariff charges and convert the tariff from commercial to domestic, Mr. Balasubramanian said.
Jayakumar finally agreed to reduce the amount to ₹8,500. Senthilkumar lodged a complaint with DVAC. A DVAC team caught Jayakumar redhanded while accepting the cash at the office of Junior Engineer, Tangedco, Vellore west.
