BJP’s State unit president Tamilisai Soundararajan on Monday visited restaurants in T. Nagar here to check if they were passing on the benefit of reduced GST to the consumers.

Ms. Soundararajan said that members of the party’s youth wing would visit restaurants across the State to verify if the reduction of the GST to 5% was being implemented widely. “We decided to do this after receiving multiple complaints that restaurants were either maintaining the pre-revision GST rate or have increased MRPs,” she said.

The BJP president was careful to point out that her party’s cadre would not take the law into their hands. “This is not enforcement. We will appreciate if restaurants have implemented the change. If they are not, we will urge them to change it,” she said. A large media contingent accompanied the BJP team, which added an unplanned visit to a second restaurant to its itinerary.

However, Ms. Soundararajan’s team could not find fault with the two restaurants it visited. “We made sure we paid for the transaction digitally,” she said, adding that an individual at one of the restaurants had suggested that she take up more such trips. “He also suggested that I visit film theatres to check ticket prices,” she said. The BJP president also made fun of actor Kamal Haasan’s cryptic tweets, saying, “I wish there was a Konar guide (to decipher) for his tweets.”
