BJP’s State president Tamilisai Soundararajan has condemned the hike in bus fare announced by the State government and called for it to be rolled back.
In a statement issued on Saturday, Ms. Soundararajan claimed that the hike in the bus fare would add to the burden of the general public. It was “not appropriate” for the government to increase the bus fare when the transport workers had just called off their strike.
Her stand was in contrast to her party colleague and Union Minister Pon Radhakrishnan’s justification of the bus fare hike.
Claiming that corruption, faulty administration and improper maintenance of buses were the reasons behind the loss suffered by the transport corporations, she said it was wrong to hike the bus fare without rectifying the actual defects.
Referring to the hike in the MLAs’ salary, Ms. Soundararajan asked whether the government was justified in its decision when people were facing hardship.
“The government should only look at options in terms of how it can turn around the loss-making transport corporations and not burden the people further,” Ms. Soundararajan told reporters later in Madurai.
