Tamil Nadu Transport staff to go on mass leave

December 08, 2014 07:34 am | Updated 07:34 am IST - TIRUCHI:

Members of the Tamil Nadu State Transport Department Staff Association will go on a day’s casual leave on December 23 to press their demands.

Addressing journalists at the end of the State executive meeting of the Association here on Sunday, president G. Paul Pandian said issue of licence, renewal of permits and registration of vehicles would be affected that day at the Regional Transport Offices across the State.

The demands included the promotion of ministerial staff to the post of Regional Transport Officer in the ratio of 2 to 1. Although the demand was conceded two years ago, it was yet to be implemented by the government, he said. Vice-president T.G. Thomas said the association also wanted counselling-based transfer for the staff.

The ministerial staff should be sent for refresher training at the training institute at Bhavanisagar. P. Subramanian and M. Ganesan, both vice-presidents, said the training was mandatory for promotion.

The proposed Road Safety Act should not affect the interests of transport department employees and the State’s sources of revenue, according to K. Balasubramanian, president of the All-India Transport Department Staff Federation.

He said several provisions of the Act went against the interests of employees and the State. The proposed national board for the transport sector would defeat the very purpose of the region-specific transport laws. He said the board would decide the licensing fee and norms.

The transport employees would stage a demonstration here on December 13 to protest the provisions of the Act, he said.
