Tamil Nadu gets more time for CCTV in police stations

December 18, 2014 09:01 am | Updated 09:01 am IST - CHENNAI:

The Madras High Court has granted four more weeks to the State to file a counter-affidavit to two petitions seeking installation of CCTV in all police stations, subject to the deposit of Rs.5000 in costs in each of the cases.

The costs should be deposited with the Mediation and Conciliation Centre of the High Court in two weeks.

The petitions were filed after the alleged rape of a woman at the Udumalpet police station and a youth was shot dead at the S.P.Pattinam station in Ramanathapuam district.

CCTV would make it be easy to analyse the situation in such incidents, the petitioners said.

When the matter came up on Tuesday, the First Bench, of Chief Justice S.K. Kaul and Justice M. Sathyanarayanan, said no counter-affidavit had been filed by the authorities.

It was granting the last opportunity to the authorities to file a counter within four weeks, subject to the deposit of costs within two weeks. The rejoinder, if any, should be filed in two weeks thereafter.

The Bench posted the matter for further hearing on February 2.
