Senior BJP leader Pon.Radhakrishnan on Friday welcomed the outcome of Sri Lankan election result and congratulated Maithripala Sirisena for his victory in the presidential election.

Addressing a press conference here, he said that BJP need not feel embarrassed by the election results in Sri Lanka since Prime Minister Narendra Modi had extended his good wishes to Mr. Rajapaksa ahead of the poll only as sign of our culture.

“The genocide in Sri Lanka in 2009 was very painful for all of us and Mr. Modi too was aware of how innocent Indians faced agony. At the same time there was nothing wrong in a prime minister wishing a country’s president. Today, Mr. Modi had already congratulated the new president also for his victory,” the Union Minister of State for Shipping and Highways said.

He accused that the genocide in the island nation had tacit support of Congress party and hence mere press statements and criticising BJP will no longer work with Tamil people.

He warned the Congress and other political parties not to ignite Tamil sentiment for political gains since the people know very well which party was in power and who were ruling when the genocide took place in Sri Lanka.
