The second national symposium on ‘Particles, Detectors and Instrumentation (NSPDI-2015)’ will be held on the transit campus of the Inter-Institutional Centre for the High Energy Physics (IICHEP) of the India-based Neutrino Observatory (INO) at Vadapalanji near Madurai Kamaraj University from March 28 to 31, according to B. Satyanarayana, co-convener of the symposium and Senior Scientific Officer, Tata Institute of Fundamental Research, Mumbai.
In a statement issued here on Wednesday, he said about 110 registered delegates from the country and abroad would attend it. A total of 60 talks by experts, contributory research papers and posters on the latest research developments in these niche areas would be presented in the symposium.
Several basic science projects, based on large-scale detector and instrumentation, including INO, ASTROSAT, LIGO-India and MACE experiments, were also coming up in the country in the near future. Besides, many national research groups were also currently engaged in building and operating large-scale accelerator and non-accelerator experiments.
A large pool of students, young engineers and scientists would have to be trained to build detectors and instrumentation required for these experiments, before embarking on actual physics analysis studies. Again, the organisers hoped that this symposium would help in networking of groups.
As part of this symposium, a public lecture being organised by INO Project Director Naba Mondal would be given at the main hall of The American College at 4 p.m. on March 27.
Special lectures by two distinguished symposium delegates from abroad would be organised at the IIT-Madras, Chennai, on April 1, he added.
