The swift action by the officials of the Civil Supplies Department on the complaint voiced in these columns to errors in the new ration card issued to me is laudable. I got a call within a day of my complaint from the Srirangam taluk office promising quick action in the matter. The errors in the ration card were quickly rectified within a day. Such sensitivity to complaints from the general public would go a long way in ensuring transparency and efficiency in governance.

Make Tiruchi

second capital

Tiruchi is in the heart of Tamil Nadu and can be reached any part of the State in five or six hours. It deserves the status of second capital of Tamil Nadu, an idea mooted by the late M.G. Ramachandran. By making Tiruchi the second capital the ever mounting congestion can be reduced to a great extent in Chennai. Moreover, Tiruchi will be easily accessible to all, from all nook and corner of Tamil Nadu and in this process it will become a blessing to the masses of whole Tamil Nadu.

Post offices

in a shambles

Since banks have recently reduced the interest rate on deposits, people, especially senior citizens, whose only source of income is interest income, started depositing their money in the post offices. But unfortunately the officials in the Post Offices face utmost difficulties in day-to-day operations. They don’t get the internet connectivity at the desired speed. Some post offices lack basic amenities and are located in remote corners making it difficult for the elderly to reach them. The Postal Department should streamline its system and provide seamless service.

Save the Cauvery

The sewage treatment plant at Panjapur has not been functioning for the past many months. The raw sewage is let into the Cauvery through Kudamurutti canal. Drinking water is supplied to even far-off districts such as Ramanathapuram and Sivagangai from the Cauvery. Not only the water and the air, but also the entire ecosystem is polluted. The Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board should act. The district administration should intervene immediately and take steps to save the Cauvery.

Promote govt.

schools in a big way

Private schools spend lavishly on publicity. Why can’t the government promote its schools in a similar fashion? The government should issue guidelines to the Tiruchirapalli City Corporation to make mass promotion on worthiness of government schools thereby ensuring brand building and to reinforce the notion that government schools are not inferior to private schools.

Asphalt SH 142

State Highway 142 (SH-142) connects Thuraiyur with Perambalur Road and this is the only route to connect Chennai from Nammakal and Karur districts. Many buses go from Thuraiyur to Perambalur and Nammakkal , Karur, Kulithalai, Musiri and Chennai.

The road starting from Thuraiyur town has huge pits and sand accumulation. It’s a bumpy ride and a challenge for even expert drivers. I request the authorities concerned to asphalt this road and ensure safe journey for people.

Stop manhandling

devotees in Srirangam

As a long-time resident of Srirangam, I am shocked to see the way the police and the volunteers push and shove the devotees inside the temple. I appeal to the Joint Commissioner and Executive Officer to check this and stop this human rights violation right inside the temple. The worst sufferers are women devotees.

Clean Tiruchi

is our aim

Clean Tiruchi is the dream of every resident and the first step towards achieving this is involving all stake-holders, particularly citizens. Only with the involvement of the masses it can be successful. Social icons such as film stars, writers, public figures, and sports stars can be involved in promoting Clean Tiruchi. Business houses and social organisations can be major partners in the mission. Tiruchi should be spick and span. For this mission, all of us must join hands.

Put up

speed-breakers

South Devi Street and its extension areas in Seshadripuram and Subramaniapuram were re-laid recently. However, the authorities have flattened all the speed-breakers during relaying works. Rash driving has become the order of the day. Many use the stretch to reach Ammamandapam Road and consequently the number of vehicles passing through the area has registered a manifold increase in the last few years. Youth riding two-wheelers at break-neck speed pose a threat to children and elders. Chain-snatching incidents are frequently reported from the area. I appeal to the authorities to erect speed-breakers at vantage points on the stretch not only as an accident prevention measure, but, also as a crime prevention measure.

Hefty parking

fee at Tirupattur

Recently, I visited Tirupattur Sri Brahmapureeswarar temple and was shocked to find that they collected parking charge of Rs. 30 for car, Rs. 60 for van, and Rs. 100 for buses. People from many parts of Tamil Nadu and other states visit the temple . But parking charges are too high. Also in the shops, vendors fleece devotees for flowers and other puja items. They are rude with the devotees. The authorities should take action to check the menace.

Voters should

reject freebies

The model code of conduct is not only for political parties, but also for voters. Every voter should take a pledge that they would not accept cash or freebies. They should analyse completely the manifestos of parties and reject the freebies mentioned in it. Acceptance of freebies lower the dignity of voters. The Election Commission has made elaborate arrangements to achieve higher turnout. It should extend all help to people with disabilities and senior citizens to exercise their franchise quickly. All voters should cast their vote and make Tamil Nadu a model State.
