Suspected Maoist in judicial custody

Suspected Maoist Mahalingam (63), who was arrested in Tiruchur district in Kerala on Sunday, was produced before Andipatti Magistrate V. Baskaran on Monday in connection with alleged arms training on Varushandu hill near here.

Police produced him before the magistrate at his residence in Andipatti. He was remanded in judicial custody, and lodged in Madurai Central Prison.

The police said Mahalingam was arrested on a charge of engaging in arms training on Varushanadu hill in 2007. He was released on conditional bail in 2009. Later, he did not appear before the court.

The police were in search of him. Acting on a tip-off, a special team arrested him in Tiruchur on Sunday, they added.
