Surreptitious sale of liquor rampant

Women belonging to Solar area have petitioned the district administration questioning the practice of surreptitious sale of liquor near the IMFL outlet along Karur Road that was closed following the court order.

The women who submitted a petition on Monday complained that liquor was being sold under secrecy all through the day and that tipplers in large numbers created enormous disturbance to passers-by.

Since liquor was being sold from early morning to late in the night, the drunkards were always by the roadside using abusive words against women and elderly people. Liquor consumption by a large number of youths was disgusting, they said.

Another petition was submitted to the Collector by residents of Thudupathy demanding closure of the IMFL outlet located close to a government school. The villagers cautioned that they would not send their wards to school if the outlet was not closed with immediate effect.

A little later, another group from the same village submitted their petition demanding retention of the IMFL outlet. Their reasoning was that it was risky for the menfolk to go to far-off places for consumption of liquor.

Closure of the outlet would lead to men getting exposed to the risk of accidents in darkness while returning on two-wheelers, women in the group sought to explain.

Police sources said the second group was brought to the Collectorate by vested interests having stakes in the operations of the bar attached to the outlet.

The police have apparently been exercising utmost restraint on protesters demanding closure of IMFL outlets due to fear of incurring the wrath of judiciary.
