Supreme Court reprieve for turf club

Racing will continue in the premises till the case is disposed of by the apex court

March 27, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:37 am IST - Bengaluru:

Racing will continue at the Bangalore Turf Club (BTC) on Race Course Road at least in the near future.

In a major setback to the State government, the Supreme Court on Wednesday granted leave over the Special Leave Petition against the 2010 Karnataka High Court order asking BTC to vacate the premises in six months.

“Now the SLP will be heard like any civil matter when the merits of the case would be argued by either side. The case will come up before the SC in due course. Going by the length of the queue, this may take a few years at least,” said Arvind Raghavan, counsel for Karnataka Racehorse Owners Association, the petitioner.

Status quo

V Harimohan Naidu, chairman, BTC told The Hindu , “We will continue racing on the land as the status quo will remain till the Supreme Court disposes the civil dispute. We will not take up any construction on the site.”
