The work to establish a separate sub-station to cater to the electricity needs of town and certain adjoining areas has started in a playground adjacent to the park at Venketa Nagar. The 110/11 kv station will be constructed within two years.
According to a senior official in the Electricity Department, work has been assigned to the Power Grid Corporation of India. The sub-station would incur an expenditure of around Rs.54 crore. A sum of Rs.5.5 crore was already given to the Corporation.
A part of the expenditure has to be met through borrowing from financial institutions. The amount to be taken as loan would be decided after the new government assumes office and presents the full budget. Preliminary talks were held with the Power Finance Corporation and the Rural Electrification Corporation Limited for taking the loan, the official said.
As the station comes up in a residential locality, extra safety measures are being taken, including laying of underground cables for drawing and distributing power, the official said.
At present, distribution of power to the town and suburbs is met from the Marapalam station.
Meanwhile, the department is in the process of acquiring land for setting up another sub-station at Lawspet. A part of land required for the purpose is already in possession and a sum of Rs. 1.6 crore has been spent for acquiring the land, the official said.
