A number of crops raised in the district will be eligible for subsidies, Collector Darez Ahamed has said. In a release, he said subsidy would be available for raising millets, pulses, oil seeds, and cotton. He said that growing maize, samai, thinai, cholam, varagu, and ragi would fetch subsidy.
Besides, as only one per cent of the total cultivated area (1,053 hectares) in the district was used for raising pulses, it had been proposed to expand the pulse area under the National Food Protection Project, National Agriculture Development Project, and the Pulse Development Project. For this a number of subsidies had been announced.
Variety of subsidies
Under this, each kilogram of certified seeds would fetch a subsidy of Rs. 12. If a farmer were to produce seeds, he would get additional subsidy of Rs. 10 per kilogram.
Pointing out that the cultivation of oilseeds in the district had slumped, which was just 3.5 per cent of the total cultivated area, it had been planned to expand the area. For this 50 per cent subsidy would be given for seeds, up to a maximum of Rs. 12 per kg for groundnut.
In order to encourage cotton cultivation, several steps had been planned. Under the Cotton Mini-mission II, it had been proposed to set up demonstration plots of one acre each and machinery would be provided with a subsidy of 50 per cent.
Also, bio-fertilizers would be available at 50 per cent subsidy.
