An awareness on abolition of child labour system was carried out on Friday by students under the aegis of Erode CLASS (Child Labourer Abolition Support Society).
A cultural programme highlighting perils inherent in child labour system was presented at the Corporation Bus Stand by members of Sembaruthi troupe based in Anthiyur.
Revenue Divisional Officer of Erode R. Narmada Devi, Inspector of Factories Mohan and other senior officials took part.
Subsequently, students distributed notices highlighting the significance of NCLP (National Child Labour Project) and joint efforts of the government departments to ensure that children below the age of 14 years are not employed as workers in tea stalls, hotels, roadside eateries, motels, and other places.
The students urged the public to shed hesitation in approaching the police with information about employment of child labourers.
The students cautioned the public saying that those found employing child labourers will be required to pay a fine of Rs. 20,000 or one-year imprisonment or both. Besides, the child must be compensated to the tune of Rs. 20,000.
