About 50 students attached to AVS Engineering College cleaned the banks of Mookaneri Lake during a cleanliness drive that was organised on Wednesday. “Most of the wastes that we collected were the remains of flowers and other items immersed as part of the rituals that followed Vinayaka Chathurthi,” they said.

The students collected plastics, empty alcohol bottles, medicines and other domestic wastes from the banks of the lake on an area of more than 53 acres, from 6 a.m. “When the drive came to an end around 10.30 a.m., we collected 25 sacks full of wastes,” one of the student coordinators N. Sulaimaan said.

Another student G. Karthikeyan said that they used to organise such cleanliness drives at the Kumaragiri Lake in Ammapet, during holidays, as part of the NSS activities of the college.
