IGCAR Director touches upon the challenges faced byteachers in modern world

Elaborating India’s growth in nuclear power and awareness on nuclear safety, Dr. P.R. Vasudeva Rao, Director, Indira Gandhi Centre for Atomic Research, Kalpakkam, addressed the Graduation Day ceremony of the Krishnasamy College of Engineering and Technology, Cuddalore, recently.

Dr. Rao advised students to inculcate good reading habit even in the Internet age, and touched upon the challenges faced by teachers in the modern world. He admired students who had excelled in engineering studies and their contribution to the society. He gave away degree certificates to 449 graduates, including 23 Anna University rank holders.

E. Sakthi Murugan, first-rank holder and gold medallist in Information Technology, was also feted. Dr. K. Rajendran, Chairman of the Krishnasamy group of educational institutions, Dr. P. Sivagnanam, Director and R. Bhuvaneeswari Anand, Executive Director attended the programme. Dr. T. Shanmugavadivel, Principal, administered the graduation day pledge to the students.

Coming up with

smart solutions

The task at ‘TCS Innovate’ required the contestants to develop a module which would detect Real-time Occupancy combining Internet of Things (IoT). A team of students from the Sri Manakula Vinayagar Engineering College, Puducherry, did well to come up with a module using Raspberry Pi and an infrared camera. Their efforts won them the third place and a cash prize of Rs. 10,000/- in the competition in which 181 teams had enrolled, said a release from the college. The competition was held recently as part of ‘Kurukshetra’ organised by the College of Engineering, Anna University, Chennai, in association with Tata Consultancy Services. The module developed by the students, Erramilli Naga Surya Praveen and Richard Henry, (Department of Electronics and Communication Engineering) and Betalam Satya Karteek (Department of Electronics and Electrical Engineering) counts the number of occupants, and displays it continuously on a computer screen and also mails the result to a prescribed mail id at any required time specified by the user. The prize winning students were appreciated by the college management and the faculty.

Hands-on training in prosthodontics

Postgraduate students of the Department of Prosthodontics, Rajah Muthiah Dental College and Hospital, Annamalai University, Chidambaram, got an opportunity for getting some hands-on training at the ‘Stepping Stones’ convention held recently. The theme of the convention was ‘Cone Beam Computer Tomography in Implant Planning.’ Dr. M. Sabesan, Dean, Faculty of Science, addressed the gathering. The guest lectures and training were taken by Dr. Balamurugan, Dr. Srinivasan and Dr. Shivashankar.

Dimensions in research

A lecture workshop for postgraduate students and research scholars was organised by the Research Cell of Auxilium College at the college campus here recently.

Rev. Fr. Selvaraj, Administrator of Mount Don Bosco, Kothagiri, spoke of spirituality in research and higher education.

Subashini and Muralimanohar, Assistant Professors, School of Business, VIT University, spoke on innovative approaches — data, information, knowledge, wisdom, connecting data to information and knowledge, project-based learning, and needs for developing new skills.

Dr. Venkata Raghava Mohan, Professor, Department of Community Health, CMC, Vellore, spoke on environmental health, intrapersonal hygiene, communicable diseases, tuberculosis, drinking water quality monitoring, sky-hydrant system and nutritional status among individuals.
