The principal of a private teacher training college here was arrested on Tuesday after a student allegedly committed suicide on Monday night.
Police said V. Latha (20) of Keezha Uppoorani under the Kalakkad police station limits allegedly hanged herself in her house. She is said to have left a suicide note that held the principal of her college responsible for her taking the extreme step.
The suicide note stated that Latha and her friends, all in their second year Diploma in Teacher Education offered by SCAD Teacher Training College, Cheranmahadevi, had approached the principal W. Kala Vinsila (42) recently seeking a modification in the third mid-term test schedule.
Refusing to alter the schedule, the Principal asked Latha, who led the students’ group, to bring her parents on Monday. “As Latha went to the college without her parents, she was not allowed to sit for the examination, which compelled her to take the extreme step. Since the suicide note holds the principal responsible for her committing suicide, the police should arrest the head of the institution,” said S.V. Suresh, a relative of the victim.
Pressing the demand, a group of villagers from Keezha Uppoorani staged dharna in front of the college on Tuesday morning without knowing that the police had already arrested the principal. After the police informed them about the principal’s arrest, they dispersed. The body was handed over to the relatives of Latha after post-mortem at Tirunelveli Medical College Hospital.
Ms. Kala was produced in a court and remanded in judicial custody.
