A strong expertise in process safety with a thorough knowledge on accident prevention principles, stringent laws and adherence to the legal provisions are required to avoid accidents in factories, said A.B. Mandal, Director, Central Leather Research Institute (CLRI), here on Thursday.
Speaking at the inauguration of a two-day national-level training course on ‘Accident/Incident Reporting, Investigation and Analysis,' Prof. Mandal said in India accidents relating to failure of process safety were devastating.
The National Safety Council (NSC) had mobilised the best expertise available in the country with a vast experience in process industry. The training programme would deliver the required results, he opined. Safety has been the utmost priority in all leather and allied manufacturing processes. The Cell for Industrial Safety and Risk Analysis-CLRI was extending its support to the process industry in quantitative risk assessment, thermo-chemical analysis and occupational safety and health. The CLRI was a model institution in incorporating industrial safety into the curriculum of B.Tech and M.Tech degree programmes offered by Anna University, he added.
S. Raghunathan, Chief Inspector of Factories, Tamil Nadu and Chairman NSC-TN Chapter, said safety was essential. Some accidents could cause permanent disability and some of them partial disability. If the plant is safe the management could be able to concentrate on quality and productivity, he said. R.P. Bhanushali, Adviser (Technical), NSC, Navi Mumbai, and V.R. Srinivasan, Secretary, NSC-TN, were among those who spoke. The programme was jointly organised by the NSC Headquarters and NSC-TN Chapter.
