Strike, hartals to shut down Kerala today

April 08, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:45 am IST - Thiruvananthapuram:

Normal life in the State is likely to be affected on Wednesday as workers in three key sectors respond to strike calls by different organisations.

Public transport and goods carriage vehicles will stay off the road as workers in the motor transport sector go on a dawn-to-dusk strike in protest against the hike in vehicle insurance premium.

The Joint Action Council of Motor Transport Unions has called upon taxis, tempo-trekker vehicles, jeeps, lorries, mini lorries, and private bus workers to strike work.

The Kerala Fisheries Coordination Committee has issued a call for a coastal hartal in the State on Wednesday to highlight the threats faced by the traditional fishers. Fishermen will stay away from work and fish markets will down shutters. The committee has called upon motorists to avoid using the coastal road network in view of the hartal. The fishers’ forum wants the Centre to reject the recommendations of the Meenakumari committee report.
