Farmers have urged the district administration to direct the banks to stay away from initiating distraint proceedings against those who had not re-paid their dues. Participating in a grievances day meeting here on Friday, they urged the administration to protect the farmers from humiliation during the course of the proceedings.
Participating in the grievances meeting the farmers also demanded to waive the interest on educational loans extended by the banks for the last five years to the wards of the farmers. The grievance meeting was presided over by Ms. P. Amutha, District Collector.
The other demands raised were: Increase in the procurement price of cow milk to Rs. 25 per litre and of buffalo milk to Rs. 30 a litre. A hike in sugarcane prices with a 9.5 per cent recovery capacity. The supply of farm equipments at 75 per cent subsidy and the widening of the Thoppur-Bommidi Road that leads to Coimbatore from Chennai and road facilities to the Vathalmalai.
In her reply Ms. P. Amutha, Collector said, the demands of the farmers would be forwarded to the government for early consideration. She also instructed the bankers to provide full details of the loans obtained by the farmers in the district.
The meeting was attended by Ms. Maheswari Ravikumar, District Revenue Officer, Mr. Manoharan, Joint Director, Agriculture, Mr. Balasubramanian, Personal Assistant to Collector (Agriculture) and Mr. S.A. Chinnasamy.
