Representatives of the minority institutions staged a demonstrations in front of the Collectorates in Ramanathapuram and Sivaganga districts, protesting against the draft of the draft new education policy, 2016, alleging that the Centre tried to infringe on the constitutional rights of the minority institutions.
A large number of teachers, correspondents and management staff of Christian and Muslim institutions in the two districts staged the protest and submitted memorandums to Collector S. Natarajan (Ramanathapuram) and S. Malarvizhi (Sivaganga) to be forwarded to the Centre.
Raising slogans against Centre’s move to implement the policy, the agitators alleged that the policy, if implemented, would cause a division among the students as it sought to segregate them based on their talents and ability and provide them differential coaching.
The policy, if implemented, would also deprive the minority institutions of their rights they enjoyed under the Constitution, they said.
The RS Mangalam Vicariate of Diocese of Sivaganga organised a protest against the policy near the St. Francis Higher Secondary School campus in CK Mangalam and presented a petition to the Thiruvadanai Tahsildar.
Parish priests, Correspondents of the schools of the Vicariate, Sisters, Teachers and local people joined the agitation, led by Rev Joseph Lourduraja, Vicar General of Diocese of Sivaganga.
