Stick to secularism, Karunanidhi tells Modi

December 22, 2014 09:25 am | Updated 09:25 am IST - CHENNAI:

DMK president M. Karunanidhi on Sunday said instead of ‘hoodwinking the minorities’ in the country, Prime Minister Narendra Modi should take steps to ensure that India remained a secular nation.

In a statement here, he said that though the Centre had explained on the floor of Parliament that Christmas holiday would stay, there were reports that December 25 would be celebrated as birthday of the former Prime Minister, A.B. Vajpayee.

“Particularly, the employees of the Union Rural Development Ministry have decided to celebrate it as The Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana (PMGSY) or Rural Road Day and Rural Development Minister Chaudhary Birender Singh will release a book,” he said.

Mr. Karunanidhi said that while Union Minister of State for Labour and Employment Bandaru Dattatreya had decided to observe Christmas day as “Good Governance Day,” Minister of state for tourism Mahesh Sharam had announced that new schemes would be introduced on that day.
