The Madras High Court has reiterated that appointments in State Transport Corporations solely based on interviews is illegal and directed the Transport Secretary to issue instructions to all State Transport Corporations to follow a court order of August this year while recruiting candidates.

Justice D. Hariparanthaman was dismissing a writ petition by Mujeebur Rahman, who sought age relaxation for appointment as a Junior Engineer in the Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation, Coimbatore. The selection was based on interview alone.

The court directed the transport corporation not to proceed with the selection.

In his order of August 27, the judge observed that appointment to various posts in State Transport Corporations by direct recruitment, based only on interviews in a secret manner, was illegal and gave a direction to fill up posts through open market, besides calling for names from employment exchanges.
