While appealing to Chief Minister Jayalalithaa to cooperate with the Central Government to ensure the early commissioning of Kudankulam Nuclear Power Project (KKNPP), Tamil Nadu Congress Committee president B.S. Gnanadesikan said the Congress will conduct awareness meetings across the State to mobilise public support in favour of the upcoming nuclear power programme.
“Since the power to be generated by the KKNPP alone can effectively bail out the power-starved Tamil Nadu in the near future, the State Government and the public should support the nuclear power project,” he said.
Arrangements
Mr. Gnanadesikan was here to review the arrangements being made for the conduct of the public meeting in support of KKNPP at Palayamkottai on February 4. He told reporters on Saturday that Union Ministers P. Chidambaram, G.K. Vasan, V. Narayanasamy, former TNCC presidents and party leaders would address the meeting, in which cadres from Tirunelveli, Tuticorin and Kanyakumari districts would participate.
As the State was badly in need of electricity for industrial growth, the Tamil Nadu Government should cooperate with the Centre in expediting the commissioning of KKNPP.
‘Ready to meet Chief Minister'
“I'm even prepared to meet the Chief Minister in this regard,” said Mr. Gnanadesikan, adding that the Congress would support Tamil Nadu Government's demand for more power from KKNPP to tide over the present crisis and also its demand for more Central assistance to solve specific problems.
Public meetings
“If the present stalemate (pertaining to KKNPP) is allowed to continue, the TNCC will organise public meetings across Tamil Nadu to mobilise public support for the nuclear power generation programme”.
When asked about the delay in police action against protestors, the TNCC president said he would not comment on it as a public interest litigation in this connection was pending before the court.
