State records peak power demand on Jan. 4

Saturday witnessed the State recording an all-time high of instantaneous peak demand for electricity. At 7-50 a.m, the peak demand of 12,141 megawatt (MW) was registered and this was about 20 MW higher than the previous best, recorded in October.

Of the record quantum of power generated on Saturday morning, the major sources included thermal power stations of the Tamil Nadu Generation and Distribution Corporation (TANGEDCO) - 3,270 MW; central generating stations – 3,293 MW and the TANGEDCO’s hydro stations – 1,271 MW.

An official points out that an additional unit at the North Chennai Thermal Power Station (NCTPS), which was damaged in a fire about one and a half months ago, is expected to resume production by the early hours of Sunday. Three other new thermal units – one unit at the Mettur power station and two units of the Vallur power plant – are contributing around 1,500 MW.
