The State Government on Thursday insisted that Tamil Nadu was not in a debt trap and was focussing on developing the skills of the educated youth. The State’s response came when Palanivel Thiagarajan (DMK) charged in the Assembly that the economy was witnessing a “slow growth rate”.

Speaking on the debate on the motion of thanks to the Governor for his address to the House, Mr. Thiagarajan said the growth rate in the State had slowed and the growth in the manufacturing sector, which constituted 11% of the economy in 2011, had fallen to 9%. Though there was no focus on the big projects in the address, the AIADMK members had not suggested a correction in the address even once, the Madurai Central MLA said. The high Gross Enrolment Ratio (GER), being claimed as an achievement by the AIADMK government, could turn into a challenge, he added.
