‘State govt. is terrorising those fighting for basic rights’

The State government is terrorising and intimidating people who fight for basic rights such as land, water and clean air by foisting cases, remanding them and branding them as Naxals, alleged Urvasi, sister of imprisoned Salem-based environmental activist Piyush Manush.

The Salem police recently arrested Mr. Manush on charges of instigating people against the proposed green corridor project.

Talking to reporters here, Ms. Urvasi alleged that the police did not follow any protocol while arresting her brother. The police taking him away looked like abduction and Mr. Manush was not allowed to meet even his advocates. Mr. Manush, she said, had never instigated anyone. He had merely expressed his opinion on the impact the project would have on ecology. Mr. Manush had raised a question on whether a study was conducted for the project.

Ms. Urvasi alleged that the arrest was merely to invoke the detention provisions of the law to curtail Mr. Manush’s freedom.
