Communist Party of India state secretary D. Pandian on Sunday blamed the economic policies of the Congress-led United Progressive Alliance Government at the Centre for the fall in the value of Rupee.
He told reporters here that India was importing coal despite having large quantities.
Of the 138 companies given permission to excavate coal, only four were involved in any mining activities.
He alleged that the remaining companies remained only on paper.
If all these companies had engaged in mining, India could have substantially reduced coal imports and also provided adequate stocks to thermal stations.
Mr.Pandian said that the missing files on coal block allocations pertained to the fictional companies and called for an independent inquiry into the issue.
The Communist Party of India also condemned the Centre’s decision to donate two warships to Sri Lankan government and urged it to scrap the move.
The party also called upon the Central Government to refrain from taking part in the Commonwealth Heads of Governments Meeting (CHOGM) to be held in Colombo in November.
He said that the Foreign Direct Investments and Foreign institutional investors (FIIs) were making huge profits, which were being taken out of India.
