The timing of the request coincides with Karunanidhi claiming that Alagiri nurtured an “unknown hatred” towards Stalin

For the second time, the issue of threat to life for the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam party treasurer, M.K. Stalin, has come up since 2006.

The party has made a representation to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, seeking to enhance security for Mr. Stalin, son of party president, M. Karunanidhi, to ‘Z’ plus category.

The timing of the request coincided with Mr. Karunanidhi claiming that his elder son and former Union Minister M.K. Alagiri nurtured an “unknown hatred” for his younger brother. Mr. Alagiri had also said that Mr. Stalin would die in three months, Mr. Karunanidhi said.

The party was quick to clarify that the intra-party feud involving the Madurai-based son (Mr. Alagiri) had nothing to do with the request for additional security now.

It was an incident reported in Madurai in 2006 that gave Mr. Stalin ‘Z’ category security, which he continued to enjoy till now, according to the police.

One of the Central Reserve Police Force personnel in the security team of Mr. Stalin, who was then the Local Administration Minister, pressed the panic button claiming that an “unidentified” intruder attempted to rush towards Mr. Stalin with a knife in June 2006.

Though the constable, Suresh Kumar Pandey, said he managed to prevent the intruder getting closer to the VIP, he could not nab him at the Madurai railway station. In the melee, he claimed, the constable sustained minor bleeding injury on his hand.

The Madurai Railway police registered a case of attempt to murder against the unidentified person.

Case remains unsolved

The case, transferred to the Crime Branch-Criminal Investigation Department subsequently, remains unsolved.
