Stalin to launch water scheme on January 25

Durai Murugan unveils bronze statue of Tiruvalluvar

Deputy Chief Minister M.K. Stalin will lay the foundation for the Rs.1,295-crore integrated drinking water supply scheme for Vellore district, envisaging the conveyance of water from the Cauvery near Mettur, at a function to be held in Katpadi on January 25, according to Durai Murugan, Law Minister.

He was speaking after unveiling a bronze statue of poet Tiruvalluvar installed at a cost of Rs.5 lakh by the Vellore Corporation at the Old Bus Stand here on Saturday.

Mr. Durai Murugan said the approval of the scheme by Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi is a result of sustained efforts made by himself and MLA C. Gnanasekaran, who repeatedly voiced the demand in the Assembly.

The government has not allotted so many funds for any other water supply scheme in the State. Tenders have been invited for the execution of the scheme, and the stone would be laid on January 25, he said.

Expressing concern about the defunct Vellore Sangeetha Sabha, which used to host music concerts in the past, the Minister said that he was going to organise a week-long music concert in Vellore from next year.
