Supporters of Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) Treasurer M.K. Stalin here have taken up with the party high command the issue of police registering a series of criminal cases against them on the basis of complaints lodged by loyalists of party’s south zone organising secretary M.K. Alagiri.
DMK’s Madurai (rural) district secretary P. Moorthy as well as the chairperson of an ad-hoc committee constituted to manage party’s urban district unit, following its dissolution recently, G. Thalapathy said that they had conveyed the issue to the high command for appropriate action.
On Tuesday, the Melur police near here had registered a case against Mr. Moorthy and four others on the basis of a complaint lodged by A. Muthuvel, party’s Melur union deputy organiser of Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes Welfare Wing.
It was registered under the provisions of Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act as well as the Indian Penal Code as the complainant had alleged that the district secretary abused him for having put up a wall-writing in view of Mr. Alagiri’s birthday on January 30.
A similar case was registered by the city police on Sunday against the urban unit’s ad-hoc committee member M. Jayaraman and former Mayor P. Kulandaivelu. In that case too, the complainant had alleged that the two party functionaries had abused him for putting up wall writing for Alagiri’s birthday.
Sought for his reaction, Mr. Moorthy said: “Every one knows that it is a false complaint. As a district secretary my job is to encourage party cadres to put up wall writings and posters. Why would I ask them not to do it? I am not among those who can stoop down to such a level.”
