Dravida Munettra Kazagham candidates will win in the by-election to Tiruchendur and Vandavasi Assembly constituencies, said the Deputy Chief Minister, M. K. Stalin, on Wednesday.

Inaugurating various schemes at a function held at Sethu Lakshmi Bai Government Higher Secondary School here, he appealed to voters to cast their votes on the basis of performance of the DMK Government.

The Government had allotted Rs. 27.10 crore for construction of a fishing harbour at Colachel in Kanyakumari district.

As it was not possible to anchor a large number of boats in a single place, a new fishing harbour would be constructed at Thengapattinam at an estimated cost of Rs. 40 crore. The fishing harbour at Thengapattinam would benefit fishermen from Thoothur, Vallavilai, Poothurai and Enayam, Eraiammanthurai and surrounding areas. They need not go to other States for employment.

The DMK Government had been constructing samathuvapurams since 1996. One hundred and forty five samathuvapurams had been formed in different parts of the State.

Mr. Stalin inaugurated a Samathuvapuram at Lakshmipuram in Ramapuram panchayat on the occasion.

He said steps had been taken to lay underground drainage pipelines throughout the State.

The dream project to clean the Cooum was the brainchild of the Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi and it would be completed at the earliest, he said. Mr. Stalin said that during his visit to Singapore last week he had discussed ways and means to implement the project to clean the Cooum with officials there and details of the plan were conveyed to officials here.

Steps would be taken to construct a ‘Manimandapam’ (memorial) for Marshal Nesamony, who was instrumental in annexing Kanyakumari district with Tamil Nadu. A decision would be taken after consulting the Chief Minister, he said.

Tourism Minister N. Suresh Rajan, J. Helen Davison, MP, MLAs Rajan and Theodore Reginald, chairperson of Colachel Municipality Asai Thampi, chairperson of Padmanabhapuram Municipality Revenkil, Collector Rajanedra Ratnoo and Superintendent of Police Shanmughavel were present at the function.
