A total of 48,641 students from 463 schools including 24,122 boys and 24,519 girls appeared for the Secondary School Leaving Certificate examination commenced at 145 centres across the district amidst strict vigil.
District Collector M. Karunakaran visited the examination centre at Mary Sargent Girls’ Higher Secondary School, Palayamkottai along with Joint Director of Department of School Education Palanisamy.
Police personnel are being deployed in front of every examination centre.
Each three examination centres are being covered by a flying squad while the standing squads, each comprising one teacher, will be responsible for every ten examination halls in the ‘vulnerable centres’ besides the regular invigilators deployed in the rooms. Members of these squads, who are being posted only on the day of the examination, have been instructed to visit the examination halls without disturbing the students writing the exams.
Based on the inputs provided by members of flying squads during review meetings being organised in the afternoon, strategy for the next day’s flying squad visit to the examination centres would be evolved.
Number of students appearing for the examination: Cheranmahadevi educational district: 16,013 (7,822 boys and 8,191 girls), Tenkasi educational district: 15,412 (7,621 boys and 7,791 girls) and Tirunelveli educational district: 17,216 (8,679 boys and 8,537 girls).
Superintendent of Palayamkottai Central Prison R. Kanagaraj said 33 prisoners from the jail had gone to Madurai Central Prison to write the SSLC public examination.
In neighbouring Tuticorin district, 26,794 students including 13,196 boys and 13,598 girls appear for the SSLC examination that commenced in 84 centres across the district. Collector M. Ravikumar visited Subbiah Vidhyalayam Girls’ Higher Secondary School, one of the examination centres.
Number of students appearing for the examination: Tuticorin educational district: 16,841 (8,185 boys and 8,656 girls), Kovilpatti educational district: 9,953 (5,011 boys and 4,942 girls).
