A Special Sub-Inspector of Police was killed in a road accident near Valliyoor in the district on Tuesday.

Police said SSI Y. Chellappa (56), who had been attached to Radhapuram police station, was going towards Kavalkinaru Junction on his bike on Tuesday morning as part of the security arrangements made along the national highway since Governor Banwarilal Purohit was proceeding from Kanniyakumari to Madurai by road.

When Chellappa was crossing Punniyavalanpuram, a speeding private omni bus, proceeding from Chennai to Nagercoil, hit his two-wheeler. He fell on the road and was critically injured. He was rushed to a private hospital near Thovalai, where he died later.

Panagudi police have arrested bus driver S. Manikandan (45) of Chokkanathapuram near Kathapattu in Sivaganga district.
