V.R. Venkatachalam was arrested by CBI on charges of duty evasion on imported luxury cars

A designated CBI court will hear on Wednesday the bail application of Sri Ramachandra University chancellor V.R. Venkatachalam, arrested by the central investigative agency on charges of duty evasion on imported luxury cars.

Mr. Venkatachalam had been accused of purchasing seven imported luxury cars from a person and was >arrested by CBI sleuths in Chennai on Monday.

Principal Sessions Judge for CBI cases, Justice R. Krishnamoorthy remanded Mr. Venkatachalam to 14-day judicial custody on Monday after he was produced before him.

Mr. Venkatachalam moved a bail plea on Tuesday and the CBI meanwhile has also moved an application, praying for a five-day custody of the accused for questioning.

The CBI had filed the >charge sheet in the case last week.

Hyderabad-based businessman >Alex C. Joseph is the main accused in the case which relates to a probe into car import scam in which high-end cars were sold to politicians and businessmen allegedly by evading customs duty.

Both the petitions were heard on Tuesday and the case has been adjourned for Wednesday.
