Four fishermen of a coastal village in this district were injured when they were attacked allegedly by Sri Lankan fishermen off Kodiakarai coast on Saturday.

Officials said the fishermen from Vellapallam village had ventured out to sea on October 10 in two fishing boats. As they were fishing just off Kodiakarai coast, the Lankan fishermen arrived there in four boats and attacked them with sickles and pelted stones. They also snatched the fish catch and other valuables and fled the scene.

Other fishermen in the vicinity brought the injured back to shore. They were admitted to the General Hospital here, where three of them were administered first aid and later discharged. One of them has been admitted as an in-patient, the sources said.

They said the fisheries department had commenced an enquiry on the incident.
